Why do you want a bunch of bacteria wandering around on the walls of your intestinal tract, creatures with funny names like bifidobacterium lactis, lactobacillus casei, lactobacillus acidophilus, and bifidobacterium bifidum? Aren't all bacteria bad?

The above named bacteria comprise the majority of the so-called "friendly" bacteria that inhabit our intestinal tract. They are friendly in that they take up space in the intestinal wall that could be taken up by dastardly "anaerobic" bacteria that have no beneficial purpose in the gut. Friendly bacteria are "aerobic" meaning that they use oxygen in their energy cycle, bad bacteria do not use oxygen thus are called "anaerobic" and all such bacteria are detrimental to your health.

To some extent, certain vitamins are made in the intestinal tract through the action of our friendly bacteria: vitamins B-1, B-2, B-6, B-12, niacin, folic acid and pantothenic acid. When your friendly bacteria numbers are eroded by the use of antibiotics, the stronger anaerobic bacteria quickly re-implant the walls of the tract and make it difficult to implant the friendly ones. Energetic efforts are necessary to restore the balance of more good than bad which is necessary for your good health.

In addition to helping you produce vital nutrients like the B complex vitamins, friendly bacteria also serve other very important functions, functions that were not known about just two years ago! We have known that friendly bacteria actually consume yeasts that are a parasitic fungus in the gut and a healthy population of the friendlies helps prevent a condition called candidiasis. This has been known for many years but recent research uncovers a function never dreamed of - analgesia of the intestinal tract. French researchers at the Institute Inserm and the University of Lille found that the administration of friendly bacteria resulted in an analgesic effect similar to that of morphine and was dramatic in cases of irritable bowel syndrome and other gastrointestinal pathologies.

The University College Cork reported: "Our results clearly demonstrate the ability of certain probiotic bacteria to protect against potentially fatal illnesses. More specifically we have shown a role for bacteriocins in protecting against the potentially fatal foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. The study clearly demonstrates how probiotic bacteria may help to improve the health of consumers."

Such clear cut evidence of the benefits of friendly bacteria should give all of us incentive to "reimplant" our intestinal tract with friendly flora every six months or so.
